Astigmatism is an imperfection in the curvature of your eye’s cornea or lens. It might help to think of your normal eye to be shaped like a football, hoeever in astigmatism, it becomes more like an oval shaped ball like an american football. This causes vision to be blurred and fuzzy. Astigmatism can be treated with the help of corrective lenses.

What causes it?

Regular astigmatism is pretty common. Infact there are more than 10 million cases of astigmatism every year in India alone. You are more likely to develop astigmatism if you have a family history of it. Less common causes of astigmatism include trauma to the eye, and previous eye surgery. The only way to know for sure if you have astigmatism is to visit your ophthalmologist and to get your eyes checked.

What does astigmatism look like?

Normally, the cornea and lens are smooth and curved in an equal manner in all directions. This helps the light rays to focus sharply onto the retina at the back of your eye. If your cornea or lens isn't smooth and evenly curved, light rays aren't refracted (bent) properly. Ophthalmologists call this a refractive error. This causes the vision to be blurry and fuzzy. You may have astigmatism along with other refractive errors like nearsightedness or shortsightedness. To you, astigmatism may just present itself as blurred vision. However, it can be accompanied with headaches and squinting of eyes in order to see more clearly.
When looking at your prescription , you are likely to see either a single value or three values. If you see one value, that means you only have a "sphere" correction, it's often abbreviated as "sph". If you see three values, that means you have astigmatism. One value is the "sphere", the next one is "cylinder" and the last one is "axis". The vast majority of astigmatism is diagnosed based on your eye prescription alone.

Can Astigmatism Be Cured with contact lenses?

If you wear contact lenses, there is some degree of astigmatism that can be corrected by the contact lens itself because it physically drapes over the cornea and provides a more regular surface. In higher degrees of astigmatism, this may not be the case and you will likely need to wear a toric contact lens.
. Regular astigmatism is more common than irregular astigmatism. Irregular astigmatism, like the type that occurs in keratoconus or from other eye diseases, is less common but also more complicated to treat. An ophthalmologist, specifically a cornea specialist, can often help in managing these cases.
